Lyrics English
Every day Mummy goes down to the shops,
And sometimes I go as well;
And of all the things we see in town
I’d never have time to tell.

Today, while Mummy was buying some
eggs,

I waited for her outside,
And there I saw a little green girl
Whose shoe-lace had come untied.

She stooped to tie it, and so did I;
Then we both turned away and both peeped back,
I smiled, and she did the same
It seemed like playing.
She wore a pretty green dress like mine;
Green stockings up to her knee;
And who do you think was that little girl?
Why, that little green girl was ME!
Summary
This poem describes a child waiting outside a shop
while the mother buys eggs. The child notices a little green girl whose
shoelace has come undone and imitates her as she bends down to tie it.
They smile at each other and the moment feels like a playful friendship.
The girl wears a green dress and green stockings just like the child.
The surprising ending reveals that the little green girl is actually the
child herself, creating a playful picture of self-recognition.
